• Most nephrectomies are done for tumours.

Non-tumour nephrectomy indications

• Non-functional kidney.
  • Rejected kidney - post-transplant.
  • Uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Recurrent infection.
  • Make space for a possible transplant, especially in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
  • Relief from mass effect, especially in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
• Trauma - kidney disrupted.
