The Overworld sky during dayThe Overworld's sky during night
The sky is a visual feature of Minecraft worlds. It changes color depending on the time of day and other factors, and contains visual features such as the sun, moon, clouds, and stars. The sky technically only exists in the Overworld. The "sky" in the Nether is completely made of fog, and the End sky is rendered with a cubemap. Vibrant Visuals however, adds a colored sky overlay to other dimensions as well.
While visually and functionally related, the sky is distinct from fog, which can be considered its horizontal equivalent in cases. Like with fog, the sky's color can be changed depending on the current biome.

Thunder and lightning strikes in Java Edition
The change of color affected by the player's vertical position especially in Bedrock Edition. For example, when a player is in the bottom void, the sky appears darker, and the color changes to purple if the player is at a high vertical coordinate such as 600-2000.

The following tables list how the base sky color is affected by the biome at daytime and during rainfall,[JE only] without Vibrant Visuals. At night, the sky color is always #000000. In Bedrock Edition, a set color is applied on top of biome colors during precipitation:[verify]
During the in-game sunrise and sunset, the sky color transitions between the day and night colors. Additionally, a red glow is visible in a set area around the sun in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition, the whole horizon has different colors depending on the progress of sunrise or sunset, which are stronger when the camera is looking at the sun, and barely visible when the camera is looking away from the sun, both vertically and horizontally.
Unique sky colors in dry biomes.
When Vibrant Visuals is enabled, all biomes have custom sky colors defined for zenith and the horizon, which are blended between specified heights. Most biomes with the same climate use the same sky colors, although certain biomes have unique colors. For all colors, see Vibrant Visuals § Atmospherics. Sky colors are constantly changing with the time of day, and different colors are applied during precipitation, but dry biomes are not affected. Other dimensions have custom sky colors as well.
History
This section is missing information about: The sky coloring behavior during sunrise and sunset in Pocket Edition 1.1.x was different from other versions, something that can be noticed by rotating the camera around. These versions were affected by an issue with the night vision effect, looking to the side opposite to the moon's side during night would cause the fog to turn yellow. Additionally, the bottom half of the skybox in Java Edition was once deep blue, the color of which looked similar to the color of water before Update Aquatic. This was later changed somewhere between release 1.0 and now.
