Can This Love Be Translated? (Korean이 사랑 통역 되나요?) is a 2026 South Korean romantic comedy television series written by the Hong sisters, directed by Yoo Young-eun, and starring Kim Seon-ho, Go Youn-jung, Sota Fukushi, Choi Woo-sung, and Lee Yi-dam. The series depicts the relationship of a multilingual interpreter and a top actress. It was released on Netflix on January 16, 2026.

Synopsis

Joo Ho-jin is a polyglot interpreter fluent in Korean, Chinese, English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish and Italian. Known as a "linguistic genius," he values precision in both his professional and personal life. Despite his mastery of foreign languages, he remains emotionally dense and "illiterate" in the language of love. Ho-jin first encounters Cha Mu-hee in Japan when she is still an unknown actress. Following their initial meeting, Mu-hee rises to global stardom after her breakout role as Do Ra-mi in a hit zombie film. The two are reunited during an international interview where Ho-jin serves as her interpreter.[1]

Following her surge in popularity, Mu-hee joins the dating reality show Romantic Trip, where she travels to various international destinations with Japanese actor Hiro Kurosawa. Ho-jin is hired as their interpreter to bridge the communication gap between the two stars. However, Ho-jin's rigid personality frequently clashes with Mu-hee's, leading to various misunderstandings. As the production progresses, Ho-jin finds himself becoming unexpectedly emotionally invested in Mu-hee, forcing him to navigate feelings he cannot easily translate.[1][2]

Development

The Hong sisters (Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran) were preparing a drama with the working title Can This Person Interpret? (Korean: 이 사람 통역이 되나요?; RR: I saram tongyeogi doenayo?) in collaboration with Director Park Jun-hwa as early as December 5, 2019; it was set to be broadcast on the cable channel tvN.[25] The working title was later revised to Interpretation of Salvation (구원의 통역; Guwonui tongyeok), with overseas filming planned to take place in China. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the project faced delays.[26] The Hong Sisters and Park later worked together on a different drama titled Alchemy of Souls in 2021 and 2022.[27][28]

Production resumed in 2023 under director Yoo Young-eun.[29] The series was produced by Trii Studio.[30] Both Trii Studio and the Hong Sisters' Studio Sot operate as label under Imaginus, led by Choi Jin-hee.[31][32] Keeha Choi served as Director of photography,[33][34] while Studio Hi, a subsidiary of Hive Media Corporation, handled visual effects.[35] By April 2024, reports indicated the series would be released on Netflix,[36] which officially confirmed production on June 27, 2024.[37] Production preparations wrapped up in June 2024.[30]

Casting

In April 2023, it was reported that Son Suk-ku was offered the lead role,[38] but ultimately declined in favor of Nine Puzzles.[29][39] In July 2023, discussions took place with Kim Seon-ho and Han So-hee for the lead roles.[40][41] By September 2023, Go Youn-jung was in talk as the female lead.[42][43][44] Ultimately, Kim and Go were chosen to portray interpreter Ju Ho-jin and top actress Cha Mu-hee, respectively.[30] On June 10, 2024, Choi Woo-sung was announced as Kim Yong-woo, Cha Mu-hee's manager.[45] On June 27, 2024, Netflix confirmed the production of Can This Love Be Translated? and revealed the casting of Kim, Go, Sota Fukushi, Lee Yi-dam, and Choi, along with script reading pictures.[46][47] In fall 2024, Keep Alberta Rolling announced auditions for extras to appear in the series.[48]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an approval rating of 83% based on six reviews from critics.[84] Pierce Conran gave the series 3 out of 5 stars,[85] while Melissa Camacho gave the series 4 out of 5 stars.[86] Lee Eun-ju of the Seoul Shinmun praised director Yoo Young-eun for delicately using urban landscapes to highlight the characters' emotional development.[87] Cultural columnist Yang Seong-hee highlighted the fairytale-like atmosphere, captivating visuals, and emotional pacing, stating that the "judicious placement of heart-fluttering moments" showcases the strengths of Korean romance dramas.[88] Kang So-jeong, an editor at Art Insight, attributed the series' success to its relatable themes, noting its resonance with viewers who identified with the protagonists.[89]

Impact

Following its release on January 16, 2026, big data analytics firm Good Data Corporation reported that Can This Love Be Translated? and its leads simultaneously dominated the TV-OTT buzz rankings. For three consecutive weeks (the third, fourth, and fifth weeks of January), the series ranked first in the integrated TV-OTT drama category. During this same period, leads Go Youn-jung and Kim Seon-ho held the first and second positions, respectively, in the cast buzzworthiness category.[90]

Can This Love Be Translated? sparked widespread parody. On January 29, President Lee Jae-myung's YouTube channel adopted the show's aesthetic for a video regarding the 21st Senior Secretary to the President meeting. The thumbnail mirrored the Netflix series, replacing the red "Netflix" logo with "Jamflix" and adapting the title into the pun, "Can you feel this policy?" This branding highlighted the Blue House's shift toward a meme-friendly style to engage netizens.[91]

Alberta Tourism Minister Andrew Boitchenko credited the series with enhancing the province's global travel reputation. In September 2025, prior to the drama's premiere, Boitchenko and representatives from Travel Alberta met with media partners, including Netflix Korea in Seoul to convert series exposure into long-term tourism and investment. After the drama's premiere on January 16, 2026, both Travel Alberta and Destination Canada released an official guide to the show's filming locations in their official website.[92][93][94]

In South Korea, a surge in interest regarding filming locations prompted the travel industry to expand specialized tours to Japan, Italy, and Canada.[95][96] The online travel platform Tripbtoz partnered with Destination Canada for an Alberta marketing campaign starting January 26, 2026. By February 15, Tripbtoz reported that accommodation reservations had doubled, with demand concentrated near filming sites in Banff and Canmore. Logistical ease remained a factor for travelers; accommodations near Calgary International Airport ranked fourth and fifth in total bookings, reflecting a balance between proximity to filming locations and travel efficiency.[97][98]

According to FlixPatrol, the series debuted at number five globally in the Netflix series category on January 17, 2026.[99] By the following day, the drama rose to third place globally and topped the viewership charts in several countries, including South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.[100]
