Chonnam National University (CNU; Korean: 전남대학교) is a national university located in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, Republic of Korea. The University was founded in 1952, under the motto “Truth, Creativity and Service”, by merging five provincial colleges in South Jeolla Province and is now widely recognized as one of the Korea’s ten Flagship Korean National Universities. Following its second merger with Yosu National University in 2006, CNU has operated a specialized multi-campus system across Gwangju, Yeosu and Hwasun, significantly extending its regional influence in both academia and industry. At the heart of the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, CNU’s students and faculty led the struggle for justice, marking a defining moment in the nation’s democratic history.
As of 2025, led by its 22nd president, Lee Keun-bae, the university has a total enrollment of 21,595 students, including 2,194 international students from 74 countries. This figure includes full-time and part-time students and corresponds to 14,778 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) students. The University currently has 2,867 faculty members, including full-time and part-times, equivalent to 2,003 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) faculty.
The institution serves as a major hub for national research and regional innovation, with approximately USD 179 million allocated annually for research. It leads several key initiatives, including the Regional Innovation system & Education (RISE), Global-Learning & Academic research institute for Masters, Ph.D students and Postdoctors (G-LAMP), the Glocal University 30 project. CNU is strategically committed to AI-driven convergent learning and industry-academia collaboration, supported by large-scale programs such as BK21 and the Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Global Network.
