Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj (born c. 1985) is an Indian Sikh preacher and the acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs. He also serves as the Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Known for his strong Panthic credentials and traditional scholarship, he represents a younger generation of Sikh clergy within the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Early life

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj was born in Jabbowal village of Amritsar district, Punjab, India.[1] He was raised in an Amritdhari Sikh family.[2] He holds a Master of Arts in History and a Diploma in Sikh Studies from the Sikh Missionary College, Ludhiana.[1][2]

Religious and social work

Gargaj began his career as a kathā-vācak (preacher) in the early 2000s.[3] He is known for his discourses on classical Sikh texts such as Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth, Prachin Panth Parkash, and the Sikh Rehat Maryada. Apart from preaching, he has also been involved in social welfare and the education of under-privileged children and orphans.[2]

Appointment as Jathedar

In March 2025, the SGPC appointed Gargaj as the Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, and as the acting Jathedar of Akal Takht at Amritsar.[4][5]

Tenure and activities

Since his appointment, Gargaj has:

  • Emphasized unity among Sikh institutions and discouraged independent groups from using the Akal Takht’s name without formal approval.[6]
  • Urged both Indian and Pakistani governments to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor for pilgrims.[7]

Controversies

His appointment faced opposition from certain Sikh organisations, including the Damdami Taksal and sections of the Nihang orders, who questioned the SGPC’s procedure.[8] A report from Takht Sri Patna Sahib in May 2025 alleged that he was declared tankhāīyā (penalised) for disciplinary reasons, though this claim remains disputed.[9]

Significance

Gargaj is considered one of the youngest Sikh preachers to hold the position of acting Jathedar at the Akal Takht.[1] His appointment is viewed as part of a generational shift within Sikh religious leadership, balancing traditional authority with modern engagement.
