Nausheen Masud (also spelled Nosheen Masood) (15 April, 1978 – December 6, 2023) was a pioneering Pakistani actress, director, television producer, and psychotherapist.[1] A central figure in the emergence of private television in Pakistan, she was widely recognized for her visionary music video direction in the 1990s and her roles in seminal drama serials such as Jaal and Dolly Ki Ayegi Baraat.[1][2]

Early life and education

Masud was born and raised in Karachi.[1] She pursued her higher education at St. Joseph's College for Women, a prestigious institution in Karachi, where she earned a degree in Industrial Design.[1] This design background influenced her later work in television production and interior design.[1]

Career

The NTM Era and On-Screen Success

Masud's career began during the revolutionary era of Network Television Marketing (NTM), Pakistan's first private television channel.[1] She started as an associate producer for a children's show before being discovered by Ghazanfar Ali, the head of Combine Productions.[1]

She became a household name as a VJ for Pepsi Top of the Pops and hosted three seasons of the high-profile fashion show Andaz Apna Apna.[1] She rose to national fame in the soap opera Jaal and later appeared in acclaimed TV shows including Colony 1952, Ghar To Aakhir Apna Hai, and the 2010 comedy hit Dolly Ki Ayegi Baraat, where she played the role of Saba.[1] Additionally, she had a role as a student in the 1998 international biographical film Jinnah, starring Christopher Lee.[1]

Direction and Music Industry

As a director, Masud was instrumental in shaping the visual aesthetic of the "Golden Era" of Pakistani pop music.[1] She directed iconic music videos for legendary artists, including Aamir Zaki as well as directing the celebrated video for "Mera Pyar".[1] She also directed many videos for Shehzad Roy, Jawad Ahmad, Fringe Benefits, and the rock band Junoon.[1]

Executive leadership

Masud was known as an "Iron Lady" in the industry due to her executive leadership across several major networks.[1] She worked at Indus Television Network and she served as the founding head of programming (2000–2002) and head of Indus Music, which later transitioned into MTV Pakistan under her leadership.[1]

She served as general manager at Hum TV and Head of Style 360, a niche fashion and lifestyle channel (2010–2012).[1] She was channel head at Play TV and Health TV (HTV), and a senior producer at CNBC Pakistan, where she developed interactive prime-time formats like Awam ki Awaz.[1] She held creative director roles for large-scale productions such as Pakistan Idol and Sur Ka Safar (2014–2015).[1]

Later life and second career

In 2015, Masud transitioned into a second career as a counsellor and psychotherapist, maintaining a private practice in Karachi until shortly before her death.[3][1] She also established Sync interiors, continuing her work in interior and industrial design.[1]

Mentorship

Masud is widely credited for discovering and mentoring a generation of modern Pakistani stars during her tenure at MTV Pakistan, including Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed, Syra Yousuf, and Ali Safina, all of whom began their careers as VJs under her guidance.[1]

Personal life

Masud was previously married to Tariq Qureshi, with whom she had two sons.[4][5] At the time of her death, she was married to her second husband, Imran.[6] Her former husband, Tariq, publicly shared moving tributes regarding her immense love and dedication to their children.[7]

Illness and death

Nausheen Masud was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2017.[1] She fought a six-year battle with the illness while continuing her professional and therapeutic work.[8] She died on December 6, 2023, in Karachi.[9][10] Her passing was widely mourned by the entertainment fraternity; actor Adnan Siddiqui remembered her as a "beautiful soul".[3]
