Plastic Beauty (ダウンタイム) is an upcoming Japanese medical drama television series written by Junya Ikegami, directed by Yuki Saito, and starring Mayu Matsuoka and Riisa Naka. Set against the backdrop of Japan's rapidly expanding cosmetic surgery industry. The series is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix in 2026.[1][2]
Synopsis
The series depicts the differing professional approaches of two surgeons at an aesthetic clinic in Tokyo. Fumi Numata (Matsuoka), a former general surgeon, transitions into cosmetic medicine with a focus on clinical necessity and surgical ethics. Conversely, Rin Tohyama (Naka) is a prominent cosmetic surgeon who characterizes aesthetic procedures as a psychological intervention for individuals navigating modern social structures. The narrative examines various aspects of the cosmetic surgery industry, including patient behavior, clinic sales strategies, and the ethical boundaries of elective medical procedures.[3]

Production
Development
In August 2025, Netflix announced the production of Downtime (originally announced under the English title Plastic Beauty) as part of its 2026 Japanese content slate.[5] The series is produced by K2 Pictures and Netflix, with Shinichi Takahashi serving as executive producer. The screenplay was written by Junya Ikegami, whose previous credits include The Queen of Villains, and the project is directed by Yuki Saito.[6]
Casting
The casting of Mayu Matsuoka and Riisa Naka in the lead roles was announced alongside the series' reveal in late 2025.[7] Matsuoka was cast as Fumi Numata, a surgeon transitioning from general medicine to aesthetics, while Naka was cast as Rin Tohyama, a prominent practitioner in the field.[8]
Filming
Principal photography for the series took place in late 2025 and early 2026, primarily in Kokubunji, Tokyo.[9]
Release
The series is slated for a worldwide release on Netflix in 2026.[10]
