Satyendra Pakhalé (also known as Satyen; born in India 20 December 1967)[1] is a mulifaceted designer. His work spans design, architecture, art, technology, healthcare and mobility.[2] His projects combine technological development with cultural references and experimentation with materials.[3][4]
Biography
Early life and education
Pakhalé was born and raised in India. From an early age, he showed an interest in drawing, painting, physics, and mechanics. Encouraged by his parents, he began making objects himself. In an interview, he recalled that during his childhood in India , many products were not industrially manufactured, which led him to create toys and other objects from available materials.[5]
He has cited the Ajanta Caves, a complex of ancient rock-cut Buddhist monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE, as an important influence during his youth.[5]
Pakhalé's decision to pursue a career in design was influenced by discovering a book by George Nelson, which he found in his school library. He subsequently undertook design studies in India and Switzerland. He studied at the IDC School of Design at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. He later received a full scholarship to attend the European campus of ArtCenter College of Design in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland.[5]
During his studies, he was taught by designers including Wolfgang Joensson (Frogdesign) and Simon Fraser (Porsche Design). Exposure to differrent design methodologies during this period influenced the development of his design approach.[5][2][6][3][7][8][9][10]
Career
After graduating, Pakhalé worked at Frog Design and later at Philips Design, under the creative leadership of Hartmut Esslinger and Stefano Marzano. At Philips Design, he was part of the New Business Creation team. In the mid 1990s, he contributed to design concepts in digital communication, healthcare, and mobility. Projects in which he held a lead design role included Pangéa, a concept car developed in collaboration with Renault, intended for environmental research appications[5][2] and work related to the joint venture PCC Philips Consumer Communications, established in 1997 between Lucent Technologies and Royal Philips Electronics.[6][3][7][8][9][10][11]
In 1998, he founded the Amsterdam-based design practice Satyendra Pakhalé Associates (SPA).[2] Since then, he has collaborated with companies including Poltrona Frau, Novartis, Cappellini, Hästens, and TOD's.[5][12]
An example of his exploratory approach to design is the Panther multi-chair (2002), created for the fiftieth anniversary of the Italian furniture company Moroso. The chair alllows for three seating positions; sitting, lounging, and reclining, within a single structure.[5]
Academic work and recognition
Pakhalé has lectured at universities and presented his work at conferences including CeBIT (Germany), Design Indaba, Human Cities and Future Design Days (Sweden).[12][13][14][15][16] From 2006 to 2010, he served as founding dean of the Master of Design for Humanity and Sustainable Living (later renamed Social Design) at the Design Academy Eindhoven.[12][13][14][15]
In 2008, L'Uomo Vogue included him in a list of 80 creative figures in design and architecture.[1][17][2][18][19] In 2014, he was selected as one of ten artist and designers for the "Design at Fairchild" exhibition during Miami Art Week, held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.[20][21][22][23][24][25]
His works has been exhibited at venues including Ammann Gallery in Cologne. Designs by Pakhalé are held in the permanent collections of institutions, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Centre Pompidou.[26][27]
Design
Philosophy
Pakhalé work is rooted in culture of making and engages with themes including poetic analogy, atmosphere, social modernity, secular humanism, craftsmanship, and technology.[5] From mass-produced industrial products to experimental one-offs, art, and architecture;[28][29][30] Pakhale aims to return objects and their environment the sensorial qualities that have often been lost due to the excesses of industrialization and consumerism.[28]
Culture of Creation is an active studio practice and applied research platform co-founded in 2013 by designer Satyendra Pakhalé and architect Dr. Tiziana Proietti. The initiative integrates theoretical inquiry with practical exploration, focusing on the fundamental human impulse to create, design, and build.[28][29]
The concept of a 'culture of creation' articulates a critical reimagining of the world as an ethical, cohesive, sensorial and culturally embedded human making, encompassing the universal need to transform ideas into tangible reality. Rooted in both historical traditions and contemporary practice, it examines the essence of creativity as a defining aspect of human experience and cultural expression.[28][29]
Approach
Pakhalé's designs can be described through multiple approaches. Design as an act of unit emphasizes a "middle path", balancing conventional binaries and boundaries, bringing together apparent opposites.[31] These extremes like luxury and poverty or tradition and modernity act as lenses which people assign value.[32] Design and pluralism reflects Pakhalé's prominent connection to universal cultural heritage, prominent in his work.[33] This is achieved by drawing from diverse cultural roots and narratives, he creates contemporary objects and architectural spaces with a strong sense of social and cultural responsibility [34] and multidisciplinary polymathic practices into his works.[35] Design for sensorial beings describes human beings and inherently sensorial entities, with six primary senses.[36] Sensory experience underlines Pakhalé's design philosophy, not only creating visual order and aesthetically interesting objects but creating frameworks that add meaning to his work.[37]
