Steven A. Schroeder

Steven A. Schroeder is an American physician and the Distinguished Professor of Health and Health Care at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).[1] He is the founding director of the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC), where his work focuses on public health strategies for tobacco control.[2]

Education and early career

Schroeder was born in Staten Island, New York. He graduated from Stanford University in 1960 and earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1964.[3] Following his medical training, he served as an officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the CDC. He later held faculty appointments at Harvard University and George Washington University, where he was the founding medical director of a university-sponsored HMO.[1]

Research and advocacy

In 2003, Schroeder established the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at UCSF. His research and advocacy have primarily focused on increasing smoking cessation rates among vulnerable populations, particularly individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders.[4] In 2014, he was appointed as a public member of the federal Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health, which advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Recognition

Schroeder has received six honorary doctoral degrees and numerous professional awards, including the Lienhard Award from the National Academy of Medicine and the Rogers Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges.[5] The Truth Initiative named its National Institute for Tobacco Policy Studies in his honor in 2006.

He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the National Academy of Medicine.[6] He also served on the editorial board of the New England Journal of Medicine for 19 years.[7]
