The as of yet untitled film centered around Ringo Starr is an upcoming biographical musical drama film directed by Sam Mendes and written by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne, based on the Beatles as part of the series The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, to be released at once on April 7, 2028.

Cast

Production

Sam Mendes conceived of the idea, and discussed the concept with studio executives in late 2023. It is the first time the Beatles have granted full life story and musical rights for official scripted biographical films.[1] The film will be directed by Mendes, who will produce alongside his Neal Street Productions partner Pippa Harris and Neal Street’s Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones will executive produce for Apple Corps Limited.[2]

On May 7, 2025, it was announced that Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan and Jack Thorne would co-write the screenplays for all four movies.[3]

Casting

Main actors of the Starr film of the series: Barry Keoghan (Starr), and Mia McKenna-Bruce (Maureen Starkey).

In June 2024, Barry Keoghan was in contention to play Starr.[4] In November, Starr confirmed that Keoghan would be portraying him.[5] In February 2025, Anna Sawai was eyed to portray Yoko Ono in the film.[6] On 31 March 2025, Keoghan was officially announced in the role as he appeared on stage alongside Sam Mendes, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.[7] In October 2025, it was announced that Saoirse Ronan would play Linda McCartney,[8] and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey Tigrett,[9] with Anna Sawai and Aimee Lou Wood in talks to portray Yoko Ono and Pattie Boyd respectively.[10] James Norton later joined the cast as Brian Epstein.[11] The castings of McKenna-Bruce, Ronan, Sawai and Wood would be officially confirmed at the end of October.[12] Harry Lloyd joined the cast as George Martin in November.[13] In December, David Morrissey, Leanne Best, Bobby Schofield, Daniel Hoffman-Gill, Arthur Darvill and Adam Pally were added to the cast.[14] In February 2026, Harry Lawtey, Farhan Akhtar, Lucy Boynton, and Morfydd Clark joined the cast.[15]

Filming

Principal photography was scheduled to begin in mid-2025.[16] Greig Fraser served as the cinematographer.[17]

Filming had begun by November 2025. It was reported that filming was banned from occurring at the Abbey Road location over concerns regarding closing the road.[18] Stefania Cella served as the production designer.[15]

Post-production

Lee Smith edited the film.[15]

Release

At an industry convention CinemaCon in Las Vegas, in March 2025, Sony Pictures announced that all films in the series will be released simultaneously in April 2028, with director Sam Mendes declaring it to be "the first binge-able theatrical experience."[19] The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 7, 2028.[20]
