Ziya Babashov (Azerbaijani: Ziya Kamal oğlu Babaşov; born 6 January 2002) is an Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestler who competes in the 63 kg weight category. He is the 2025 U23 World Champion and a three-time Azerbaijani national champion.[1]
Career
Babashov was born in the Jalilabad District of Azerbaijan. He first gained international attention in 2019, winning a silver medal at the 2019 European Cadets Wrestling Championships in Sofia.[2] The same year, he placed third at the Azerbaijani senior national championships. [3]
In 2022, Babashov won the silver medal at the European U23 Wrestling Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, losing in the final to Georgia’s Giorgi Shotadze. Later that year, he became national champion, representing the Central Sports Club of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan.
In 2023, he captured the gold medal at the Military World Wrestling Championships in Baku, and successfully defended his national title.
At the 2024 European U23 Wrestling Championships held in Baku, Babashov won the gold medal in the 63 kg category.[4] He also represented Azerbaijan at the 2024 BRICS Games in Kazan, where he won silver.
In 2025, Babashov earned a silver medal at the European U23 Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania,[5] before claiming the world title at the 2025 U23 World Wrestling Championships in Novi Sad.[6]
