Name

Alcidodes Marshall, 1939

Type species: Lixus trilobus Fabricius, 1801, by [?] (Note, this type designation is by co-ordination with Alcides Schoenherr, 1825 and its designated type species, Marshall, 1939 is not explicit about the type species. See comments below).

Gender: masculine

Synonyms

  • Alcides Sahlberg, 1823: 47. (Preoccupied)
    • Type species: "Alcides" senex Sahlberg, 1823, by monotypy.
  • Alcides Schoenherr, 1825: 584. (Preoccupied)
    • Type species: Lixus trilobus Fabricius, 1801, by original designation.
  • Alcidodes Marshall, 1939: 582 (Replacement name for Alcides Schoenherr, 1825. But see also Sahlberg, 1823 by publication precedence. If that is to be treated as available published usage of Alcides for such Coleoptera. Regardless, the generic name(s) above are junior homonyms of Alcides Hubner, 1822 [Lepidoptera]). Later as valid genus, e.g. after Haaf, 1961: 452, also Lyal and Curran, 2000; see e.g. Morimoto & Kojima 2007: 228.
  • "Eugnostus" per Boheman/Schönherr, 1836: 608 (Not available, reads "Eugnostus Hagenb. in Litteris" as synonym of his Alcides. See also Alonso-Zarazaga, 1999: 206).

[Note: Schoenherr's, 1825 work includes listing the (earlier) species description and combination of Sahlberg and attributes the genus to Dalman. Both Schönherr and Dalman are contributing authors or editors in the wider series. Schoenherr, 1826 attributes the genus to both Dalman & Sahlberg, but subsequently himself alongside in Schoenherr, 1836. For further use of pre-occupied Alcides see Schoenherr, 1826: ["Disp. Meth."] 270 (As Alcides Dalm., Sahlb.); also see Schoenherr, 1836: [t.3] 608 (Stated as "Alcides Dalm., Sahlb, Schh. (1)" where "(1) Schh. Curc. Disp. Meth. p. 270, no. 159"]; also see Schoenherr, 1836, 1845: [t.8] 46, 448 "Genus 468. — ALCIDES. Dalman. — H. op. VIII. 1. p. 46." where "hujus operis" is a self citation to earlier p.46 in same work which itself cites prior volume "Hujus operis III. p. 608. gen. 278" and anther of Schoenherr as "Curc. Disp. Meth. p. 270."]

Else Alcides Wiedemann, 1823: 164 can likely be treated as nomen nudum as reads "Lixus alboguttatus; 158. 67. zu Alcides Schönh." This therefore attributes the preferred genus to Schoenherr [arguably same concept as per Sahlberg]. See also "Alcides" sensu Boheman in Schoenherr, 1836: 618, under Sternuchopsis.
