Note: [!] Strohecker, 1975 (p.333) indicate the name is first made available by Gerstaecker 1858 with the type species Ephebus cardinalis Gerstaecker, 1958. This is later echoed in e.g. Shockley et al., 2009: 23. In contrast, Arriaga-Varela et al., 2007 comment (p.17) that "According to Bousquet (2004) the name Ephebus was first validated by Chevrolat (1836) in the fifth release of Dejean's second edition of his catalogue, not by Gerstaecker (1858) as previously suggested." If this is the case however, Ephebus cardinalis cannot be the type species (as also claimed by Arriaga-Varela et al., 2007) because it was was not among the species included in that older work.
Chevrolat in Dejean, 1836: 439 contains eight species vestitus Dej.; erotyloides Chevrolat; ursinus Dej.; pubescens Dej.; nigricornis Dej.; globosus Dej.; limbatus Dej.; hispidus? Hebst (Erotylus) [perhaps implying the latter two are synonyms]. This formation is then discussed by D'Orbigny, 1844 (1854?) alongside a diagnostic description. The availability of the genus (and its authorship) then depends on whether any of the Dejean's mentioned species were then available. Bousquet & Bouchard & 2013: 140) indicate that there are no available species names in the earliest usage by Chevrolat in Dejean, 1836, therefore it is nomen nudum.
Gerstaecker, 1858: 293 originally included five species, E. cardinalis Gerstaecker, 1858; E. terminatus Gerstaecker, 1858; E. convexiusculus Gerstaecker, 1858; E. pumilus Gerstaecker, 1858; E. hirtulus Gerstaecker, 1858; none of which are previously mentioned by Chevrolat in Dejean, 1836.
