Biomes

List of all ocean biomes:

Deep warm oceans do exist in bedrock edition, but are unused, so they aren't included in this article.

Description

The separate colors of each ocean variant in Java Edition.

Oceans are vast expanses of water from sea level to the ocean floor, which is at a depth of roughly Y=45 for normal oceans and Y=30 for deep variants. The seafloor is fairly hilly, featuring multiple peaks and valleys.

All oceans together are the largest biomes by area, covering anywhere around 28–29% of the surface area of the Overworld when factoring in all of its variants.

Common generation

All oceans are vast bodies of water that usually take up a lot of space. They all generate with ocean ruins, which are either there warm or cold variant. All oceans have a deep variant except for warm oceans. Ocean Monuments generate in these deep variants.

Ocean

Main articles: Ocean and Deep Ocean

Oceans generate with seagrass and kelp along the floor, which is made of sand or gravel. The floors of non-deep oceans can generate patches of dirt and clay.

Frozen Ocean

Main articles: Frozen Ocean and Deep Frozen Ocean

Frozen oceans do not generate with seagrass or kelp. The surface of frozen oceans are covered with ice, but not deep frozen oceans. Both frozens oceans and deep frozen oceans generate large icebergs.

Cold Ocean

Main articles: Cold Ocean and Deep Cold Ocean

Cold oceans have less seagrass compared to other ocean biomes, while deep cold oceans have more amounts of large seagrass. Cold ocean ruins generate in these biomes. Cold ocean floors mainly consist of gravel.

Lukewarm Ocean

Lukewarm oceans have more seagrass compared to other ocean biomes, and deep lukewarm oceans have more amounts of large seagrass. Warm ocean ruins generate in these biomes. Lukewarm ocean floors mainly consist of sand. Pufferfish can spawn in these biomes.

Warm Ocean

Main article: Warm Ocean

Warm ocean floors mainly consist of sand, similarly to lukewarm oceans. Coral reefs and sea pickles are exclusive to this biome. Zombie nautili that spawn in this biome spawn as coral zombie nautiluses. Warm oceans do not have a deep variant, so ocean monuments can't spawn here.

Java Edition

Java Edition Classic
0.0.12aAn infinite ocean now surrounds the map.
Java Edition Infdev
20100227-1414Added infinite worlds. Oceans generate as random parts of the terrain, similarly to mountains.
Java Edition Beta
1.8Pre-releaseAs part of a terrain generation overhaul, oceans have been made into their own proper biome. Previously, oceans were not considered their own biome.
The ocean level has been decreased by one block (64 to 63).
Oceans have been made much larger and take up most of the map and their floors were made of a mix of clay, dirt and sand.
Java Edition
1.7.213w36aOceans have been made much smaller. In addition, oceans now only have gravel as the ocean floor. In contrast, old oceans had their floors made out of dirt, sand and clay.
Ocean is now required for the new "Adventuring Time" achievement.
1.814w25aAdded ocean monuments, which generate in oceans.
1.1318w08aSplit the ocean into frozen, cold, lukewarm, and warm oceans, along with deep variants for each of them.
18w08bDeeps warm oceans no longer generate.
18w09aAdded underwater ruin structures, which generate in oceans.
18w10aOcean is no longer required for the "Adventuring Time" advancement.
18w11aAdded shipwrecks, which generate in oceans.
1.1620w06aUnderwater ruins and shipwrecks are now rarer.
1.1721w06aOcean biomes generate with a stone floor below Y=50 instead of a gravel floor.[1]
21w15aOceans generate with a gravel floor once again.
1.1821w43aRemoved deep warm oceans.
21w44aOcean is once again required for the "Adventuring Time" advancement.
