In rail transport, a train is a vehicle or (more frequently) a string of vehicles capable of being moved along a continuous line of rails or other guideway for the purpose of conveying freight or passengers between points on a predetermined route. The train may be hauled or propelled by one or more vehicles designed exclusively for that purpose (locomotives) or may be driven by a number of motors incorporated in all or several of the vehicles (multiple units).

As of 2018, there are approximately 1,052,000 kilometres (654,000 mi) of railway track in use worldwide. (World Bank (via Archive.org))

A train on the Anglesey Central Railway circa 1916

The Anglesey Central Railway (Welsh: Lein Amlwch, Amlwch Line) was a railway in Anglesey, Wales, connecting the port of Amlwch and the county town of Llangefni with the North Wales Coast Line at Gaerwen. The railway was opened in stages from 1864 to 1867, but was financially troubled. In 1876 the line was sold to the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), who invested significantly in it. The line was subsequently operated by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) from 1921, and by British Rail following privatisation in 1946. Passenger services ceased in 1964, during the Beeching Axe, but freight services continued to operate on the line until 1993. The railway's tracks have been left in situ, and local groups have demonstrated an interest in restoring services. Alternative proposals have been made by Sustrans to use the route as a cycle path. The line's future is unclear.

United States President Warren G. Harding in the cab of a Milwaukee Road class EP-3 electric locomotive.

The Milwaukee Road's class EP-3 comprised ten electric locomotives built in 1919 by Baldwin and Westinghouse. They were nicknamed "Quills" because of their use of a quill drive. Although they were good haulers and well liked by engineers, poor design and constant mechanical problems plagued them for their entire lives and they were the first of the Milwaukee Road's electric locomotives to be retired.
