How to Identify

A ginger family plant (Zingiberaceae) growing 2.4 m tall in tropical regions up to 500 m elevation. The flower emerges on a separate stalk from the underground stems.

Etlingera foetens is a monocotyledonous plant species that was first described by Carl Ludwig von Blume, and got its current name from Rosemary Margaret Smith. Etlingera foetens is part of the genus Etlingera and the family Zingiberaceae. No subspecies are listed in the Catalog of Life.

Notes

The Zingiberaceae are almost all in the tropics with a few in the subtropics. In the Achasma the flower comes on a separate stalk from the underground stems. It is probably used in medicine.
