Other Uses

The heartwood is light red to dull reddish brown; it is clearly demarcated from the 2 - 5cm wide band of pale red sapwood. The texture is fine and smooth; the grain straight or slightly crossed, sometimes with a regular wave forming a diagonal ribbon in radial sections. The wood is soft to moderately hard; light to moderately heavy; durability is low, but the wood is seldom attacked by beetles. It seasons very well. The wood is very easy to work; it takes an almost glossy finish under sharp tools. The wood is a favourite for making cheap cigar boxes; also, on account of its cheapness, ease of working and freedom from warping and attacks of beetles, it is a favorite among Filipino and Chinese cabinetworkers for the bottoms and sides of drawers, shelves and backs of sideboards, dressers, wardrobes, etc.
