The tubers and roots are edible and can be eaten.

A tropical plant. In Argentina it grows from sea level to 1,500 m above sea level.

A yam. It is a vine. The leaves are long and tapering and they are heart shaped at the base. They occur singly along the vine.

There are about 650 species of Dioscorea.
